Other Pain Conditions

(Back, Neck, Joint, and Other Pain)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (other pain)

This disorder can occur after injury to an extremity or nerve in most cases.  The cardinal manifestation is persistent pain and sensitivity in the area of the damaged limb and within and outside the area of if there is a damaged nerve.  Some medications can be helpful but there is also a role for interventional procedures.  In the upper extremity a procedure called a stellate ganglion block can be performed to reduce or eliminate symptoms initially.   In the lower extremity a procedure called a lumbar sympathetic block can be used to eliminate or reduce symptoms.  If long term relief cannot be obtained by these means, spinal cord stimulation can be another option.  Dorsal root gangion stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation and nerve blocks are additional options.

Arthritis of the Hip (joint pain)

Often this disorder is more definitively treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.

Arthritis of the Knee (joint pain)

Often this disorder is best treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.

Pancreatitis Pain or Pancreatic Cancer Pain other pain)

Medications can be considered as well as other options like celiac plexus or splanchnic nerve blocks or neurolysis.  Neurolysis can be considered in cases of cancer and involves injection of substances that can intentionally damage the nerves carrying pain signals resulting in pain relief.

Arthritis of the shoulder or chronic shoulder pain (joint pain)

Often this disorder is best treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (other pain)

Often this disorder is best treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.

Ulnar Nerve Entrapment (other pain)

Often this disorder is best treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.

Meralgia Paresthetica (other pain)

There are options including nerve blocks and surgical decompression by referral.  Peripheral nerve stimulation can also be utilized.

Ilioinguinal Neuralgia (other pain)

This condition can occur from pinched or damaged nerves resulting in groin pain.  Medication, nerve blocks, surgical decompression and stimulation of the nerve are options that can be considered.

Iliohypogastric Neuralgia (other pain)

This condition can occur from pinched or damaged nerves resulting in groin pain.  Medication, nerve blocks, surgical decompression and stimulation of the nerve are options that can be considered.

Genitofemoral Neuralgia (other pain)

This condition can occur from pinched or damaged nerves resulting in genital and upper thigh pain.  Medication, nerve blocks, surgical decompression and stimulation of the nerve are options that can be considered.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (other pain)

Often this disorder is best treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.

Occipital Neuralgia (other pain)

We can offer nerve blocks or stimulation of the nerve in certain cases.

Trigeminal Neuralgia (other pain)

We can consider medications or even injections.  Referral can also be made for surgery or cyberknife treatment.

Piriformis Syndrome (back pain)

Steroid Injections can be utilized to calm down the muscle and occasionally botulinum toxins can be used to relax the muscle.

Foot and Ankle Pain (joint pain)

Often this disorder is best treated by surgery but we can offer treatments that can help until that point or if the pain persists after surgery.  There is also the potential of benefit from peripheral nerve stimulation or doral root ganglion stimulation.

Diabetic or Peripheral Neuropathy (other pain)

These conditions can be treated with medications and can additionally be treated with spinal cord stimulation.

Migrane Headaches (other pain)

Various medications can alleviate some symptoms and botox injection can also be used as a tool to reduce symptoms.

Spasmodic Torticollis/Cervical Dystonia (other pain)

Injections of Botox can be used to alleviate symptoms in many cases

Spasticity from stroke or spinal cord injury (other pain)

Intrathcal baclofen by implanation of a pump that delivers medicine to your spinal fluid can be offered if you have inadequate relief of symptoms with medication alone.

Chronic Pelvic Pain (other pain)

This problem can be caused by a variety of problems but can be treated with superior hypogastric plexus blocks or even

Postlaminectomy Syndrome (back pain)

Many patients have persistent pain in the back and/or legs from injury to the spinal nerves and have already had surgery to fix it and there is no more the surgeon can do to help.  This more commonly occurs from damage to the nerves that occurred because of the problem that the surgery was performed for but in some rare cases the surgery itself can damage nerves.  In such cases we can perform injections like caudal epidural lysis of adhesions or epidural steroid injections for this. Often spinal cord stimulation is the best option in these cases that can provide long term relief.
